CJ’s Anime Review Blogs – Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3, Episode 9

I return once again for my penultimate written episode review of Sailor Moon Crystal as I travel though Japan. This has been an extremely fun trip and it’s been exhilarating to be in a country where manga and anime are simply a part of many lives, rather than just some niche interest. My favorite part of the trip, anime wise, was likely going through the Sailor Moon Art Exhibit. It was a legitimate museum exhibit, featuring many Sailor Moon items, including original manga color spreads. It was incredible to be able to see some of these pieces for myself. I can’t tell you how giddy I got to see, in particular, one important piece I’ve held dear since my childhood featuring Eternal Sailor Moon and my favorite villain, Sailor Galaxia.

Speaking of the manga, it often surprises me that I am one of the few reviewers out there that reviews Sailor Moon Crystal as an adaptation. Most reviews I’ve seen just review it on its own, which leaves the reviewer understandably confused. Why, after all, would Sailor Mercury get excited about a super computer she read about… in a book? Of course, knowing the manga was written in the 90’s, it’s easy to blame Toei Animation for keeping this little bit of dialogue in what was supposed to be a modern adaptation, rather than thinking this was something the company had written itself. I wish more reviewers at least commented that this is an adaptation, rather than pretending like this is an original property. Continue reading
